Japanese browser maker takes on IE, Firefox

A Japanese software company is stepping up international promotion of its Web browser in the hope of carving out a 5% share over the next few years of a market dominated by Internet Explorer and Firefox.
The Sleipnir browser is well-known among Japanese technophiles, many of whom value the high level of customization that the browser allows. At the center of this customization is the ability to select either the Trident or Gecko layout engines for each Web site visited. Trident was developed by Microsoft Corp. and is used in Internet Explorer while Gecko is used in Mozilla’s Firefox.
As any user who has changed Web browsers knows, some sites look different or offer different functionality depending on the browser in use. By clicking a small button in the bottom left of the browser and switching between Trident and Gecko, users can choose the best one for the particular site.
Fenrir Inc., which is based in Osaka, began development of the browser in 2005 and has been offering an English version alongside its main Japanese version for sometime but decided to step up promotion overseas after noticing demand rising for the browser from international users, said Yasuhiro Miki, director of Fenrir’s overseas marketing division.
“We’d like to focus on advanced users,” he said.
In the next couple of years, Fenrir hopes to dramatically grow its user base from the current roughly 100,000 users to around 17 million, Miki said. That corresponds to about 5% of the English-speaking Web user base, he said.
In Japan, the browser has a 9% market share, according to Fenrir. No independent data to verify that claim is available, but a recent survey of 3,003 computer programmers published by Nikkei ITpro put Sleipnir’s share at 6% among that group.
Initially, the focus is on the English-speaking market, but Fenrir has plans to look at other language versions, including Spanish and French.

Need to get up to speed fast with the Eclipse IDE? In this entry, I’m going to share my top 10 list of basic Eclipse tips. These are very simple tips, but I’ve noticed that for some reason many people using Eclipse for the first time end up learning these tips the hard way (through discovery). The following 10 tips should be known by anyone using Eclipse on a day to day basis. In future entries I’ll share some advanced tips - but first the basics.

1 Use Code Assist
Code assist (also known as auto-complete) is the kind of feature that becomes almost completely automatic after a very short time. Most modern IDEs have a similar feature - for instance, Visual Studio calls it Intellisense.
The concept is simple - just press the code assist key combination (by default ctrl-space) and the IDE will either fill in where you’ve started typing or display a menu to allow you to choose an auto-completion from several possibilities.
This is the feature you will use the most in Eclipse. I just noticed that I can type ctrl-space without moving my fingers from the home position at all :).

2 Navigate Through Code By ctrl-Clicking
This is another feature that you stop consciously thinking about once you’ve gotten in the habit. While editing, you can move to a field, method, or class by holding down the ctrl key and clicking on the identifier you’re interested in. This makes navigation dead simple.
When looking through unfamiliar code, this feature is great. If you are wondering what a class is, or what the implementation of a method looks like, it’s as easy as ctrl-clicking it.

3 Quickly Open Classes and Resources by Name
There are two ways to open a class or resource in an editor: the slow way and the fast way :). Don’t use the slow way - there’s no good reason to.
To open a Java class, press ctrl-shift-T. This will display a dialog box that allows you to type in a class name. To open a non-Java resource (a .txt file for instance) use the ctrl-shift-R shortcut. These open boxes support wildcards, partial names, and even camel case names (try typing ctrl-shift-T, AIOOBE to see camel case search in action).
There is hardly ever a reason to use the Package Explorer view to manually pick out a class to open if you know its name.

4 Know the Keyboard Shortcuts
Eclipse has extremely good keyboard shortcut support. Most of the common operations have an associated keyboard shortcut, and learning these keyboard shortcuts is the most effective productivity boost you can give your Eclipse experience.
There are too many keyboard shortcuts to enumerate them all here, and the previous tip already mentioned two of the most useful shortcuts. However, I will list the shortcuts I think are most useful:
ctrl-shift-G: searches for references to a highlighted class, method, field, or variablectrl-shift-F4: closes all open editor windowsctrl-o: outline popup - very useful for quickly jumping to a method in a large classF4: shows the hierarchy viewer for a class (ctrl-T shows similar data in a popup version)ctrl-m: toggle maximize of the current editor or viewctrl-F11: run the last launched configuration
There’s even a keyboard shortcut you can press that will show you all available keyboard shortcuts in the current context: that’s ctrl-shift-L.
It’s worth noting that the keyboard shortcuts can be customized. However, I don’t recommend you do this. It makes pair programming and team collaboration harder because each machine may have a different set of keyboard shortcuts. The shortcuts Eclipse ships with are good defaults - I recommend leaving them that way.

5 Set the Heap Size
Eclipse is a large, complex, Java-based IDE. It needs lots of memory to perform well. In fact, if you’re using Eclipse to do daily development, you should configure your machine so that Eclipse can use RAM in preference to any other processes.
When starting Eclipse, you should always specify a large maximum heap size. The default Eclipse uses is far too small for normal use. There are lots of ways to specify this when starting Eclipse (see Google). The easiest way is to use the -vmargs parameter with the Eclipse native launcher executable:
eclipse -vmargs -Xmx1024M
That syntax will work only on Sun’s JVMs, by the way. And, yes, I do give my IDE 1GB of RAM to work with. My development box has 4GBs so I have plenty to spare :).

6 Configure Eclipse To Use a JDK, not a JRE
Eclipse comes with its own Java compiler, so technically you don’t need to install a Java Development Kit (JDK) from Sun to develop Java programs with Eclipse - a Java Runtime Environment (JRE) works just fine.
However, you’re going to want to install a JDK and configure Eclipse to use it. The reason is that this is the easiest way to get the Java source code into your development environment. Doing this will allow you do set browse into and set breakpoints in Java classes, as well as giving you Javadoc support in the IDE for all the standard library classes and methods.
To configure Eclipse to use a JDK, first make sure you’ve installed a JDK on your machine. Then in Eclipse, go to Window -> Preference -> Java -> Installed JREs, and make sure that the default (checked) JRE points to your JDK installation.

7 Use the Eclipse’s Refactoring Support and Code Generation
Eclipse originally became popular because of its support for various kinds of refactoringsof Java classes. These refactorings are still some of the best of any IDE available today.
Many of the refactorings are somewhat hidden and will show up when performing other operations, but you can get started with refactorings by right-clicking in the Package Explorer and looking at the Refactor and Source menus.
Eclipse also has extensive support for code generation. If you’re writing constructors, getters, or setters by hand then learning to use code generation for this will be a huge time saver. Looking at the Source menu mentioned above will get you started with code generation.

8 Use Multiple Workspaces Effectively
Eclipse supports a concept called workspaces. A workspace is a container of projects that has its own set of preferences and metadata. An installation of Eclipse can work with multiple workspaces - you can tell Eclipse which workspace to use when starting up.
Why are multiple workspaces useful? Many developers create an Eclipse workspace for each version of an application, so doing maintenance work and new development don’t conflict. This maps very naturally to branches in a source control system. Multiple workspaces are also good for separating different projects you may be working on at the same time.
The easiest way to specify which workspace Eclipse uses is to use the -data and -showlocation parameters with the launcher:
eclipse -data c:\myworkspace -showlocation
The -data parameter directs Eclipse to use the “c:\myworkspace” directory on the local machine as the workspace directory. The -showlocation parameter shows the workspace location in the Eclipse title bar - very helpful when running multiple Eclipse instances at the same time.
One note - don’t waste time setting your preferences in each workspace you create. Simply use the Import and Export options under the file menu to export preference from one workspace you’ve already set up into new workspaces you create.

9 Use Templates
Eclipse has two different concepts of templates. I’m not going to talk much about Code Templates, which control what generated code looks like. Instead, I’d like to point your attention to Editor Templates, which are a bit like macros.
For instance, open a Java class in an editor, type in “sysout” and press ctrl-space. An editor template automatically expands that to “System.out.println()” and positions your cursor in the right place. This is probably the simplest example of templates, but they can be much more complex than that.
Get comfortable with templates, and learn the template for each piece of boilerplate code like loops, casts, try/catch blocks, etc. You should never have to write these things by hand if you are comfortable with the templates. Even better, you can create your own parameterized templates for commonly used code constructs.

10 Set Type Filters
You can filter the types that Eclipse uses for auto-completion and when searching for classes. For example, there are two classes called List in Java’s standard library - java.util.List and java.awt.List. If you’re not a Swing, developer, you probably don’t care about java.awt.List and almost always want Eclipse to prefer java.util.List. To do this, you can filter out java.awt.List (even better, java.awt.*).
Filters are configured through Window -> Preferences -> Java -> Appearance -> Type Filters. If you’re seeing classes show up at the top of your search you know you’re not interested in, filter them out for faster searching.

Clip2Net - The easiest way of publish and file sharing

If you share a lot of files, folders and screenshots with others, take a look at a freeware application called Clip2Net. It lets you select a specific part of your desktop area and it upload to the Internet for free. You will receive a link to the image and code to use for publishing image on your blog, forum, or Web site. Drag your files into the Clip2Net Drop Zone or paste them from your clipboard to upload instantly. Version 0.7.4b has new languages added and additional image tools added.

Clip2Net is all about speed. Historically, for example, when I’ve wanted to publish an image from my screen to the web I’ve reached for an image capture tool such as IrfanView, then I save the file I’ve captured locally, and then I might upload it using a service such as Flickr. Clip2Net anticipates that these steps go together, and eliminates the need for multiple applications.

You don’t have to register to use Clip2Net, but I recommend doing so, because you get more control over what you upload and share if you do. You get access to 500MB of storage space for your files and images if you register, and you can manage what you upload with more precision.

Clip2Net has added access to the PicNik image editing service to its mix, so you get most of the same features that you would expect in a dedicated image editor. RaimaRadio looks quite promising at the beginning, with a nicely designed interface and lots of radio stations to choose from. The problem is that many of them aren't working. I tried as many genres as I could and I always got some unavailable channels. Well, maybe today isn't my lucky day.

As I said before, the program features a nice interface, although it only works at its best when it's maximized. If not, windows and boxes don't resize properly and information overlaps.

JR Split File - Split a large file into smaller files

The File Split function allows you to split a large file into smaller files and create a standard .bat file that can be used to reconstruct a copy of the original file.
This function is useful for breaking large text files into more usable segments or for breaking a file into segments to fit on multiple diskettes.

First select the file you want to split into smaller pieces. Click "!" button to open file selection dialog.

By default, the directory is the current JR Split File installation dir. You can change this by clicking on the "!" button. Do not select a floppy drive because JR Split File won't pause for you to insert disks.

Bytes per file: This is where you select the maximum size of the resulting files. For example, if you have a 4 MB ZIP file that you wish to put on diskette - you may wish to select the 1.44MB option from the size drop-down box. This would split the file into 3 segments and also create the .bat file needed to restore the files to the single original.

Template for splitting files: By default, this is the file name for the file you selected. HOWEVER, since this function uses a DOS based .bat file to reconstruct the split files - it is imperative that the Template file name conforms to DOS file name limitations. You should limit the Template file name to 8 characters with no blank spaces or special characters.

Generate batch file for merging: By default, this option is selected because without the .bat file, there is no way to restore the created segments into a copy of the original - it is recommended you leave the default.

After clicking the OK button - the selected file will be split into the desired directory and file size using a simple numbering system for new file extensions. For example, the split of massive.txt will result in massive.1, massive.2, massive.3, etc. and, of course, the massive.bat file that is used to reconstruct the segments into a copy of the original. All of the file segments and the .bat file must be in the same directory in order for the .bat to be run and function properly.

Save images in Microsoft Word documents as separate files

You can save all the pictures in a Word document to individual image files using the Save as Web page option (Word 2000, Word 2002/XP, and Word 2003) or by unzipping the .docx file (Word 2007).

For manually adding pictures to a Microsoft Office Word document is a simple process. Saving pictures already embedded in a Word document as separate image files can be a bit more difficult–unless you know these simple tricks.

Imagine the following scenario. Some sent you a Word document loaded with pictures (30 or more). You need the pictures as individual image files, but for some reason the document’s creator can’t send you the images.

Now, you could open the document in Word, select a single image, copy it, paste the image into your favorite image-editing application, and then save the picture. But, this would take too long. You could also create a script or macro to remove copy the images, but again, this is more work than necessary. Following are the simple tricks.

Save as Web page

Using the following steps for Word 2000, Word 2002/XP, or Word 2003:

Open the document in Word.
Click File from the Standard Toolbar.
Click Save As.
Specify your Save in location.
Select Web Page (*.htm; *.html) from the Save as type drop-down menu, as shown in Figure A.
Click Save.

When you save the document as a Web page, Word creates an .htm file and folder containing the embedded images, as shown in Figure B.

By default, Word saves supporting files to a subfolder in the same location as the main .htm file. By default, Word saves supporting files to a subfolder in the same location as the main .htm file. You can instruct Word to save the files to the .htm file’s location instead of a folder from the Web Options settings window.

The .htm file contains the document’s text, formatting information, properties, image references, and so forth. Open the .htm file with and HTML editor, and you can see the code Word generates. As I mentioned above, the folder contains the document’s embedded images and a filelist.xml file, as shown in Figure C.

If the image has been resized within Word, the folder will contain both the original image and a resized copy. Word will preserve each file’s original format (.jpg, .png, etc.) but will not preserve the image’s original file name. Word renames the files in ascending order starting with the first image in the document. Each original image is immediately followed by the resized copy, if it exists.

Depending on the Web Options settings, Word may automatically create a resized image when you save the file as a Web page. Word may also convert the image to a .gif. For example, if you haven’t told Word to allow .png as a graphics format under Web Options and you insert a .png file into your document, the supporting-files folder will contain both the original image file and a resized, reformatted .gif copy.

You can now copy the file(s) to another location.

Unzipping a .docx file

With Word 2007, Microsoft introduced the XML-based .docx file format. The new format is essentially a ZIP container, which contains a series of XML files and any embedded images. To access the embedded images in a .docx file, use the following steps:

If it’s not already a .docx file, Open the file in Word 2007 and save the file as a Word Document (*.docx).
Change the file extension on the original file from .docx to .zip, as shown in Figure D.

Open the file using a ZIP application. The image files should be listed at the top of the file list, as shown in Figure E.

Right now Docstoc OneClick is Windows only, but a Mac version is coming soon. There doesn’t seem to be a way to configure OneClick to work with a web-based email service like Gmail or Yahoo! Mail. So when it launches an email Windows, it will load up whatever Windows thinks is your default email application, which might be Outlook, Outlook Express, or Thunderbird.

Docstoc OneClick doesn’t work with all file types, just documents like Word, Excel, or PDF files. You cannot upload media files. File transfer service YouSendIt offers a similar application, but without the limitations on file types, and with a higher file size limit. But the advantage to using Docstoc is that users can view documents without downloading them.

When it comes to tracking down some icons for a project -- nothing real fancy, and preferably under some kind of open license -- image searching on Google doesn't always do the trick. ICONLook is a search site that you can try instead: it's specifically for icons, and it has some useful features that make it worth a peek if you're in a pinch. These are generally OS-type icons, for stuff like apps, documents and search buttons, so don't get your hopes up for anything too fanciful. Heck, we couldn't even find anything as wild and crazy as a cat icon on ICONLook.

Selection is not ICONLook's strong point. Even within the categories it's designed for, there's not a lot of variety. On the plus side, many of the icons are available in a number of different sizes, and there are links to the source and the license for each one. This puts to rest any worries that this might be some kind of hack job, or the work of nefarious icon pirates. Instead, what you get is a legitimate, middle of the road selection of licensed icons that will hopefully expand to become more useful.

After you choose your city and preferences, you'll be able to view the current weather conditions (temperature, humidity, UV index, and so on), a 10-day forecast, and even satellite images.

Every time you insert a DVD movie, My Movies 2 indexes it. It downloads a description, cover art, actor info, MPAA rating, and all that good stuff. Sony Ericsson brings Flash, Java together for phones

Sony Ericsson wants mobile software developers to have the best of both worlds.
Next week at JavaOne, the company plans to demonstrate its Project Capuchin, which will allow software developers to create applications for mobile phones that can use pieces of both Java ME and Adobe Systems’ Flash Lite to create their applications. The company plans to release a set of APIs (application programming interfaces) and a software development kit in the second half of this year to bring the two different mobile development styles together.

For example, Java developers could decide to use the richer user interface technology found in Flash Lite, said Ulf Wretling, general manager, head of developer program and communications for Sony Ericsson. Or maybe a developer wants to use Java’s three-dimensional graphics for a mobile game but would prefer to use Flash Lite for menus, he said.
The problem with this kind of project is that while it creates a “bridge” between the two technologies, as Wretling put it, it also pulls developers away from the current road map for both Java and Flash Lite. The difference here is that developers will still be able to create regular Java or Flash applications using this set of APIs, just mixing and matching technology from the other camp as needed.
This technology will be used on the mass-market mobile phone, not the smartphone category with more sophisticated operating systems. Sony Ericsson phones will arrive in the second half of the year with this technology, but the company plans to release the software development kit before the phones arrive.

Sun Microsystems pushed out a "near final" version of MySQL 5.1 on Tuesday, but is holding back the production release of the open-source database until it irons out some remaining bugs, officials said Tuesday.

Sun wants to avoid issuing another buggy release of the database, which is what happened when MySQL, which Sun acquired in January, released MySQL 5.0 two years ago, said Marten Mickos, the former CEO of MySQL who is now a senior vice president at Sun.
"When we released MySQL 5.0 it didn't really meet our quality standards," he said Tuesday at the start of the MySQL Conference & Expo in Santa Clara, California. "With 5.1 we are being much more conservative, much harder on ourselves."
Sun made a "release candidate" of the software available for download on Tuesday. Mickos said it will release the production version by the end of June, or about three months later than planned.
This marks the first MySQL conference since Sun acquired the company in January. MySQL had been planning an initial public offering before Mickos decided to accept Sun's US$1 billion acquisition offer at a dinner with Sun CEO Jonathan Schwartz last November.
Mickos showed a photo on Tuesday of himself and two other MySQL executives, taken on the beach at sunset in Santa Cruz, California, standing around a fire and ceremoniously burning the IPO documents that they never used.
"We took all those bankers' documents and our stock ticker symbol and everything else and we burned it," he said. "It was a sad moment, but also a moment of leaving things behind" and accepting the company's future as part of Sun.
Sun says the deal makes sense because it will be able to bring its vast sales, engineering and support resources to MySQL. Sun has about 32,000 employees worldwide and MySQL had only 400. Sun also hopes the deal will open new doors for it to sell its server hardware and other products.
Mickos and Schwartz, who also spoke here, sought to emphasize the synergies between the companies. Schwartz said he has been a champion of open-source software since he took over as CEO two years ago last week.
"The number one thing we are working on with Sun now is performance and scale," Mickos said. "We are known as one of the fastest databases, but all our big customers tell us they want more scale."
MySQL already has some very large customers, including Amazon and Google. But such customers typically modify the open-source software to support their large-scale Web applications.
Sun's goal is to add better scale and performance to the official, supported releases of MySQL, and to better support traditional back-end applications where IBM, Oracle and Microsoft are the dominant vendors.
My SQL 5.1 adds some of those capabilities, including table and index partitioning, which will improve query response times; and row-based replication, for faster and more reliable replication. The update also includes an event scheduler that lets administrators automate common SQL tasks.
The release candidate issued Tuesday is not recommended for production use unless a customer needs the new features right away, Mickos said. He said the delay in the release was not related to Sun's acquisition. The release candidate already has fewer bugs than there were in the production release of MySQL 5.0, he said.

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. -- Software maker Adobe announced on Tuesday that the company had released a widely anticipated update to harden the security of its ubiquitous Flash Player software and patch previously-disclosed software vulnerabilities.

The update fixed a flaw that security researcher Shane Macaulay used in the PWN2OWN contest at the CanSecWest conference to compromise a fully-patched Windows Vista laptop. The update also revamps the security of the Flash Player to solve several major issues that could serve as a vector of attack, including a DNS rebinding attack that has worried browser makers.

"This is the update we’ve referred to in a couple of earlier posts," the company stated on its blog. "These potential vulnerabilities could allow someone who successfully exploits them to take control of the affected system, so we recommend users update to the latest version of Flash Player."

The company and some security researchers have urged Web developers to rebuild their Flash application to make sure that they still work under the new player and benefit from security fixes in authoring tools.

The latest software can be downloaded from Adobe's Flash Player Download Center or through the programs automated update functionality. Flash developers should read the company's white paper on the changes that could affect current Flash applications.

Facebook is close to putting an uncomfortable and embarrassing legal episode behind it.

A person briefed on the status of dueling lawsuits between Facebook and the competing site ConnectU said on Sunday that Facebook was finalizing a settlement with the founders of ConnectU — brothers Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss and their colleague, Divya Narendra.

The ConnectU founders were accusing Mark Zuckerberg and the original crew behind Facebook of pilfering their profitable idea back in 2003, when they were all Harvard students. Facebook had filed a countersuit, accusing ConnectU of unfair business practices.

Terms of the settlement were not disclosed. In the meantime, all motions in the case against ConnectU have been terminated.

ConnectU did not immediately respond to an e-mail message requesting comment. A California federal judge had ordered the parties into mediation last year.

The ConnectU founders asserted that they hired Mr. Zuckerberg, then a sophomore at Harvard, in 2003 to help create a campus-wide dating site called Harvard Connection. They say that he stalled on the project for months while nurturing his own idea and ultimately starting TheFacebook.com. The case cast doubts on Mr. Zuckerberg’s ingenuity, and discovery efforts turned up some embarrassing material — like his diary. Facebook clearly needed to make the suit go away before a widely expected initial public offering that could come as early as next year.

A Facebook spokeswoman said the company would not comment on legal matters. But the person briefed on the status of the negotiations said motions to dismiss the cases were expected to be filed “within weeks.”

Yahoo plugs its AMP plans for graphical ads

Later this year, Yahoo expects to have in place the first phase of a new system intended to generate greater revenue from graphical online advertising.

The system, called AMP, is expected to become available in the third quarter of 2008 for newspapers participating with Yahoo in an online ad consortium. But that's just the initial phase. Yahoo says it "plans to extend the functionality of the platform as well as participation to additional publishers, advertisers, agencies, and ad networks through the rest of 2008 and into 2009."

A report Sunday in The New York Times took a somewhat pessimistic view of the timing, saying the system is "still months away from being ready" and pointing to Yahoo's newspaper partners getting going with AMP "in the late summer or in the fall."

AMP is supposed to make it simpler for Yahoo's partners--newspaper and otherwise--to sell online ads across a range of outlets and to focus those ads by say, geography or demographic profile. Eventually it is expected to expand beyond display advertisements to other types of ads, including search and video.

The new ad management platform, Yahoo said in its press release, "will deliver a faster, easier, and more automated and integrated way to create, buy, and sell advertising and do so across a transparent global marketplace."

The AMP pitch comes as Yahoo faces increasing pressure in an unsolicited takeover bid by Microsoft. On Saturday, Microsoft threw down the gauntlet, telling Yahoo it has three weeks in which to "sit down and negotiate a definitive agreement." Failure to comply would spur Redmond to launch a proxy battle for control of Yahoo's board and could bring a lower bid than the initial $31 per share.

A number of times in the weeks since Microsoft launched its courtship, Yahoo has claimed that the software giant has undervalued Yahoo's worth. Never was that more apparent than in mid-March when Yahoo filed documents with the Securities and Exchange Commission, saying it would double its cash flow by 2010--in part because of the strength of its online advertising efforts.

AMP, previously known as the Advertiser and Publisher Exchange, or Apex, is a combination of technologies developed in-house and through acquisitions such as that of Right Media.

The last time Yahoo worked on a major ad platform, it struggled. The search ad platform known as Panama, eventually debuted about a year ago, and Yahoo executives have expressed satisfaction with its real-world financial returns. The Wall Street Journal reports that the company has between 500 and 700 engineers working on AMP, according to a newspaper partner.

Acer launches six-speaker laptops

Acer said that it now aims to take laptop users as close as they can get to the high-definition home theatre experience.

The top model of the new "Gemstone blue" line of laptops has a screen with the same resolution as a top-of-the-line HDTV, at 1,920 x 1,080 pixels, and will have six speakers, including a subwoofer, for so-called 5.1 surround sound.

The computer will go sale next month in the United States. A model with three speakers and a smaller screen(but still HD resolution) will also be available. Both will have built-in Blu-ray disc drives.

The computer industry has long had its set of standard screen resolutions, while the consumer electronics industry has standardised on different ones. Acer's blue line effectively adopts the consumer-electronics standard, which means that many movies and all HD TV shows will fill the screen, without black bars.

Acer said the laptops would be the first with 1,920 x 1,080-pixel screens, and the top model is the first laptop with six speakers.

The high-end model has an 18.4in screen, placing it in the "desktop replacement" category of heavy laptops that aren't meant for more than occasional travel.

Even with six speakers, the laptop isn't capable of true surroud sound, since that requires speakers on either side of the listener at ear level.

Some current laptops use two speakers to simulate the envelopming experience of surround sound.

Acer's laptop will do the same, but the simulation is better with six speakers than with two, said Acer senior vice-president Jim Wong.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Web search leader Google Inc. plans to start selling ads to appear in Web videos after it agreed a partnership with YuMe, an online video advertising network.

YuMe, a Redwood City, Calif.-based start-up, said on Thursday, it will serve InVideo overlay adverts as part of Google's AdSense for video beta advertising program.

Google has traditionally used AdSense for text-only advertising but said the video program extends its offer to targeted, contextually relevant video graphical ads and text overlays.

Google has been working on ways of developing advertising revenue for online video since it bought YouTube, the video-sharing site, in November 2006.

As Internet access speeds become faster around the world more television and Hollywood-produced video content is moving to the Web on sites like Hulu.com, owned by News Corp and NBC Universal, and Fancast.com, owned by Comcast Corp.

HandBrake is an open-source, GPL-licensed, multiplatform, multithreaded DVD to MPEG-4 converter, availabel for MacOS X, Linux and Windows.

So you just bought an iPod touch or iPhone and want to stock it with movies from your DVD library. There are countless commercial utilities that promise to rip DVDs, but I recommend trying HandBrake. This open-source (read: free) utility for Windows (download), Mac (download), and Linux converts your DVDs for viewing on iPods, iPhones, Sony PSPs, and other portable media players. It's by no means new, but I just had to share my newfound appreciation for it.

Note that because most commercial DVDs are copy-protected, HandBrake can't work its magic without a decryption utility running in the background. Rumor has it that DVD43, also free (but Windows-only), works really, really well.

PageOnce takes the information appropriate to each account and displays it in a Netvibes/PageFlakes-like layout. Use it to view how many cell minutes you have left, the balance of your credit card/bank account (use with caution..), updates to your social network, and much more. Despite the fact that PageOnce needs to build relationships with many of the account providers in order to retrieve information from them (not everyone has an API like Facebook after all), the company has done a good job digesting information for at-a-glance presentations from a fairly wide range of providers. The “fetch once” technology behind the site, however, only pulls information from elsewhere; it doesn’t push information back, so you can’t actually make changes to your bank account while on PageOnce; you’ll need to follow links to the bank’s website itself.

The photo book industry is still pretty new in the Malaysian market, and my research only turned up three companies which offer the service – Photobook (http://www.photobook.com.my/), Pixart (http://www.pixart.com.my/) and Ecaztudios (http://www.ecazstudios.com/).
These companies offer varying levels of service and size of books so you should take a look at our guide and decide which one is right for you.
Once you've decided on the one you want, you need to go to the company's website and download their free proprietary software to help you create the book.
The one exception is Ecazstudios, which does not have any software for you to download – instead the site requires that you use a program like iPhoto (if you're using a Mac) or Adobe InDesign to do the layout.
Once the layout is done, you just send in the file (either online or via snail mail) and make a payment for the book, and voila about a week later you get your book!
However, which photo book company is best? Well, it all depends on what you want.
Here's a quick look at the three companies we looked at.

Photobook.com.my
As far as variety goes, photobook.com.my has the most choices when it comes to book sizes – the company offers the small 5R (20 x 15cm) size, a 21 x 21cm book, A4 landscape, A4 portrait, 30 x 30cm large photo book and the impressive A3 (40 x 30cm) book for serious photo enthusiasts.
The company's Templatexpert Photostudio software is also the most advanced of the pre-packaged proprietary applications we've tried, allowing you to move pictures around, resize them and even spread a single picture out across two pages (if the resolution is high enough).
There are also a number of pre-made and downloadable templates to choose from and the software even allows you to add different types of borders to your photos.

he only hiccup we found was that by default, your images will be cropped to fit into the frames in the template.
However, this is easily remedied by going into the Options then the Settings screen and unchecking the "Cut pictures to size of image box automatic."
Once the layout is done, you can then click on the "Order" button to pay for the book and upload it to the manufacturer.

Pixart.com.my
Pixart.com.my has the distinction of being one of the first companies (if not the first) to offer photo books in Malaysia at pretty reasonable prices too.
Pixart offers only two sizes of photo books – either a Pocket Photo Book (6 x 8in) or an A4-size Coffee Table Photo Book.
The one advantage of the larger Coffee Table Photo Book is that it has a little cut-out on the front which shows the photo you have on your first page.
The books come in 10 or 12 sheets, which work out to 20 or 24 pages when printed on both sides.
Pixart offers two types of prints – either the more regular offset printing similar to magazine-type printing, or the slightly more expensive "photo imaging" prints which are supposed to be the same print quality as photos produced from photo labs.

Ecazstudios.com.my
You've probably seen examples of photo books from ecazstudios.com.my at some Apple stores in the Klang Valley and with good reason – this photo book company is probably the most hands-off when it comes to making your photo book.
For one thing, Ecazstudios requires you to be familiar with applications like Apple's iPhoto application or Adobe's InDesign.
Furthermore, the company currently does not accept uploading of your photo book, and you will instead have to rely on plain old snail mail.
Ecazstudios also offers two sizes of photo books – 6 x 8in version as well as the A4-size but the company is more flexible when it comes to creating your photo book you can opt to create a more unique photo book in whatever size and options that you want.

Now the technology landscape is on the verge of changes that will transport us to places few people have imagined. We know that computers will be vastly more powerful, mobile, and connected. The question for the next 25 years is whether we'll be able to tell where technology ends and the rest of our life begins.

Technology will become firmly embedded in advanced devices that deliver information and entertainment to our homes and our hip pockets, in sensors that monitor our environment from within the walls and floors of our homes, and in chips that deliver medicine and augment reality inside our bodies.

This shiny happy future world will come at a cost, though: Think security and privacy concerns. So let's hope that our jetpacks come with seat belts, because it's going to be a wild ride.

Sprout is a browser-based, WYSIWYG editor for Flash with an interface reminiscent of Photoshop or Dreamweaver. Designers can use it to create, publish and track Flash widgets, websites and mashups, thereby obviating the need for them to work with programmers who would cost time and money, and who might not execute designs satisfactorily.

The application itself is entirely Flash/Flex-based and won’t require account registration for first-time users (that is, once the private beta period is over). As can be seen in the screenshot to the left, the interface consists of a staging area for construction of a so-called “sprout” (don’t call it a widget!), as well as several panels for tools, components, pages, properties, and more. I found that my experience with Photoshop served me well for creating a sprout (embedded below) that displays TechCrunch feeds, since the same editing concepts are applied by both programs. That said, it would be nice if Sprout had undo capabilities and proper layering, as found in Photoshop.

Internet Explorer 8 taking shape

Web browsers are getting much more attention recently with Mozilla staying on its course to mature its next-generation Firefox broswer and especially Microsoft, which apparently is reaching first significant milestones with IE8. The next Internet Explorer is schedulhed for a H1 2008 released. which is rather surprising as IE7 is just over one year old now and IE6 has been in place for more than five years before the current version's release.

According to Dean Hachamovitch, general manager of Microsoft's IE team, IE8 "correctly rendered" the Acid2 page, which includes reference code to test a browser, on December 12, Microsft considers the Acid2 test as "one of several milstones for the interoperability, standards compliance, and backwards compatibility that [Microsoft is] committed to for this release."
