Internet Explorer 8 taking shape

Web browsers are getting much more attention recently with Mozilla staying on its course to mature its next-generation Firefox broswer and especially Microsoft, which apparently is reaching first significant milestones with IE8. The next Internet Explorer is schedulhed for a H1 2008 released. which is rather surprising as IE7 is just over one year old now and IE6 has been in place for more than five years before the current version's release.

According to Dean Hachamovitch, general manager of Microsoft's IE team, IE8 "correctly rendered" the Acid2 page, which includes reference code to test a browser, on December 12, Microsft considers the Acid2 test as "one of several milstones for the interoperability, standards compliance, and backwards compatibility that [Microsoft is] committed to for this release."

Mozilla Firefox, Portable Edition 3 Beta 1

Mozilla Firefox®, Portable Edition is available packaged with Mozilla Firefox 3 Beta 1, allowing you to test all the latest features in the upcoming version without disrupting your current Firefox installation.

Because Firefox Portable is self-contained, it will not write any data to your hard drive or registry. That means you can test out Firefox 3's new features like Places, and improved location bar without messing up your current settings. You don't have to install Firefox 3 Portable to a flash drive, you can just as easily install it to a folder on your hard drive.If you want to run Firefox 3 beta while you have a Firefox 2 window open, you'll need to make one small tweak. Find the FirefoxPortable.ini file in \Other\Sources\ and copy it to the directory that has FirefoxPortable.exe. Edit FirefoxPortable.ini with Notepad, Wordpad, or whatever text editor you prefer, and change AllowMultipleInstances=false so that it says true. Save the file and you can now run Firefox 2 and 3 at the same time.

nokia and backbase cooperate on mobile ajax

Backbase is the Ajax Company, making Ajax-based Rich Internet Application (RIAs) simple to build, simple to deploy, and simple to maintain.

Backbase and Nokia are collaborating together on a study of current and potential Ajax use on mobile devices.

In 5 to 10 year consumers are expected to browse the Internet increasingly via mobile devices, and less often via desktop PCs. Mobile AJAX can significantly increase the user experience of mobile web applications, but there are still several areas that need need further research.

The Nokia has already placed themselves well in the market, pushing their web browser onto their S60 devices. Unfortunately, there are also several limitations that come along with these devices, including small screens and slow connections. The goal of the project is to look for creative and innovative solutions to the issues they’re finding within the limits of the technology available today. Other companies are also helping out, including Mozilla and Opera.

Windows XP Significantly Outperforms Vista, Tests Show

In the latest Mac versus PC ad, that put-upon Windows guy quietly concedes he's downgrading" from Vista to XP. He may have good reason: new tests show that the older XP runs common productivity tasks significantly faster than Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT)'s newest operating system.

Researchers at Devil Mountain Software, a Florida-based developer of performance management tools, have posted data from their most recent Windows performance tests -- and Vista, even after it's been upgraded to the new Service Pack 1 beta package, is shown to be a laggard.

'Kill switch' dropped from Vista

Microsoft is to withdraw an anti-piracy tool from Windows Vista, which disables the operating system when invoked, following customer complaints.
The so-called "kill switch" is designed to prevent users with illegal copies of Vista from using certain features.
But the tool has suffered from glitches since it was introduced with many Windows users claiming that legal copies of Vista had been disabled.
Microsoft says its efforts have seen a drop in piracy of its software.
In a statement released by the company, Microsoft corporate vice president Mike Sievert, said: "Users whose systems are identified as counterfeit will be presented with clear and recurring notices about the status of their system and how to get genuine copies."

Visual Studio 2008

With the past few releases of Visual Studio, each Visual Studio release only supported a specific version of the .NET Framework. For example, VS 2002 only worked with .NET 1.0, VS 2003 only worked with .NET 1.1, and VS 2005 only worked with .NET 2.0.

One of the big changes is starting with the VS 2008 release is to support what we call "Multi-Targeting" - which means that Visual Studio will now support targeting multiple versions of the .NET Framework, and developers will be able to start taking advantage of the new features Visual Studio provides without having to always upgrade their existing projects and deployed applications to use a new version of the .NET Framework library.

Now when you open an existing project or create a new one with VS 2008, you can pick which version of the .NET Framework to work with as shown above - and the IDE will update its compilers and feature-set to match this. Among other things, this means that features, controls, projects, item-templates, and assembly references that don't work with that version of the framework will be hidden, and when you build your application you'll be able to take the compiled output and copy it onto a machine that only has an older version of the .NET Framework installed, and you'll know that the application will work.

A tool that can be used to verify the installation state of the .NET Framework 3.5

If you want to detect whether your .NET Framework 3.5 installation was successful or not, you can use this tool to verify that the right versions are installed.

Steps:
1. Download the following file to your computer: http://cid-e7f319723234fb5c.skydrive.live.com/self.aspx/Public/netfx35tools/NetFx35_detect_issues.bat

2. Open a command prompt by doing start -> run and type cmd.

3. enter the full path to where the script runs.

What is happening:
This script will check the registry for the right versions of the .NET Framework 3.5, .NET Framework 3.0 SP1 & .NET Framework 2.0 SP1. they are not there then it will return what it did find and let you know that an error happened. Further on Vista, it will tell you if you have appropriately installed .NET Framework 2.0 SP1 & 3.0 SP1.

Return codes:
0 == Success
>0 == Failure
