Internet Explorer 8 taking shape

Web browsers are getting much more attention recently with Mozilla staying on its course to mature its next-generation Firefox broswer and especially Microsoft, which apparently is reaching first significant milestones with IE8. The next Internet Explorer is schedulhed for a H1 2008 released. which is rather surprising as IE7 is just over one year old now and IE6 has been in place for more than five years before the current version's release.

According to Dean Hachamovitch, general manager of Microsoft's IE team, IE8 "correctly rendered" the Acid2 page, which includes reference code to test a browser, on December 12, Microsft considers the Acid2 test as "one of several milstones for the interoperability, standards compliance, and backwards compatibility that [Microsoft is] committed to for this release."

Mozilla Firefox, Portable Edition 3 Beta 1

Mozilla Firefox®, Portable Edition is available packaged with Mozilla Firefox 3 Beta 1, allowing you to test all the latest features in the upcoming version without disrupting your current Firefox installation.

Because Firefox Portable is self-contained, it will not write any data to your hard drive or registry. That means you can test out Firefox 3's new features like Places, and improved location bar without messing up your current settings. You don't have to install Firefox 3 Portable to a flash drive, you can just as easily install it to a folder on your hard drive. If you want to run Firefox 3 beta while you have a Firefox 2 window open, you'll need to make one small tweak. Find the FirefoxPortable.ini file in \Other\Sources\ and copy it to the directory that has FirefoxPortable.exe. Edit FirefoxPortable.ini with Notepad, Wordpad, or whatever text editor you prefer, and change AllowMultipleInstances=false so that it says true. Save the file and you can now run Firefox 2 and 3 at the same time.

nokia and backbase cooperate on mobile ajax

Backbase is the Ajax Company, making Ajax-based Rich Internet Application (RIAs) simple to build, simple to deploy, and simple to maintain.

Backbase and Nokia are collaborating together on a study of current and potential Ajax use on mobile devices.

In 5 to 10 year consumers are expected to browse the Internet increasingly via mobile devices, and less often via desktop PCs. Mobile AJAX can significantly increase the user experience of mobile web applications, but there are still several areas that need need further research.

The Nokia has already placed themselves well in the market, pushing their web browser onto their S60 devices. Unfortunately, there are also several limitations that come along with these devices, including small screens and slow connections. The goal of the project is to look for creative and innovative solutions to the issues they’re finding within the limits of the technology available today. Other companies are also helping out, including Mozilla and Opera.

Windows XP Significantly Outperforms Vista, Tests Show

In the latest Mac versus PC ad, that put-upon Windows guy quietly concedes he's downgrading" from Vista to XP. He may have good reason: new tests show that the older XP runs common productivity tasks significantly faster than Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT)'s newest operating system.

Researchers at Devil Mountain Software, a Florida-based developer of performance management tools, have posted data from their most recent Windows performance tests -- and Vista, even after it's been upgraded to the new Service Pack 1 beta package, is shown to be a laggard.

'Kill switch' dropped from Vista

Microsoft is to withdraw an anti-piracy tool from Windows Vista, which disables the operating system when invoked, following customer complaints.
The so-called "kill switch" is designed to prevent users with illegal copies of Vista from using certain features.
But the tool has suffered from glitches since it was introduced with many Windows users claiming that legal copies of Vista had been disabled.
Microsoft says its efforts have seen a drop in piracy of its software.
In a statement released by the company, Microsoft corporate vice president Mike Sievert, said: "Users whose systems are identified as counterfeit will be presented with clear and recurring notices about the status of their system and how to get genuine copies."

Visual Studio 2008

With the past few releases of Visual Studio, each Visual Studio release only supported a specific version of the .NET Framework. For example, VS 2002 only worked with .NET 1.0, VS 2003 only worked with .NET 1.1, and VS 2005 only worked with .NET 2.0.

One of the big changes is starting with the VS 2008 release is to support what we call "Multi-Targeting" - which means that Visual Studio will now support targeting multiple versions of the .NET Framework, and developers will be able to start taking advantage of the new features Visual Studio provides without having to always upgrade their existing projects and deployed applications to use a new version of the .NET Framework library.

Now when you open an existing project or create a new one with VS 2008, you can pick which version of the .NET Framework to work with as shown above - and the IDE will update its compilers and feature-set to match this. Among other things, this means that features, controls, projects, item-templates, and assembly references that don't work with that version of the framework will be hidden, and when you build your application you'll be able to take the compiled output and copy it onto a machine that only has an older version of the .NET Framework installed, and you'll know that the application will work.

A tool that can be used to verify the installation state of the .NET Framework 3.5

If you want to detect whether your .NET Framework 3.5 installation was successful or not, you can use this tool to verify that the right versions are installed.

3. enter the full path to where the script runs.

What is happening:
This script will check the registry for the right versions of the .NET Framework 3.5, .NET Framework 3.0 SP1 & .NET Framework 2.0 SP1. they are not there then it will return what it did find and let you know that an error happened. Further on Vista, it will tell you if you have appropriately installed .NET Framework 2.0 SP1 & 3.0 SP1.

Return codes:
0 == Success
>0 == Failure

Tune your PC for better performance

Computers make many things simpler. They can also cause a great deal of work, particularly if your PC goes on strike, refuses to move faster than a snail’s pace or crashes whatever programs are running.

Computer experts therefore recommend tuning up the operating system (OS). Just like an apartment, the hard drive of a computer should be cleaned regularly to help the user better enjoy spending time there. Experience dictates that the Windows OS moves slower and slower over time – the computer experts are in agreement on this point.

The issue is a part of the OS known as the registry, says Peter Knaak from the German consumer tsting organization stiftung Warentest in Berlin. This is not something that lay users can clean by hand, because you could end up deleting the wrong thing,” the computer expert says.
-By Star Newspaper

“I have a hand-written guide on hand for the few steps I can do on my own.” He recommends special programs that help clean the registration database.
An overly full hard drive can also slow down a computer – and in a worst-case scenario lead to more frequent crashes in the system. Computer expert Gerald Himmelein from Hanover-based c’t magazine advises against installing every program that you can get your hands on.

“To prevent unnecessary taxing of the operating system, users should always thoroughly consider beforehand whether a given program is really necessary,” Himmelein recommends.

Delete unused programs

Along the same lines, users who determine that they no longer need a given program should delete it, Himmelein also recommends.

“Before deleting programs, no matter how small they are, you restore the system to the state prior to the deletion,” the computer expert also advises.

In terms of standard hard drive cleaning, the experts agree that temporary data should also be periodically deleted. The Temp folder on the hard drive contains files that a PC stores on an interim basis while doing things like installing programs but which it no longer needs afterward.
These files – but never the entire folder – should be deleted on a regular basis, Himmelein recommends.

why Ajax is the right choice for business applications ?

With the emergence of the Web 2.0 trend, alternatives to Ajax technology seem to be popping up on an almost daily basis. Technologies such as Microsoft's Silverlight™, Adobe's Flex™ and Sun's JavaFX™ claim a nearly identical set of benefits in exchange for moving off of the internationally standardized web platform.
It's a bad bet. Here's why.

Reach & Simplicity

In the early web, when the idea of a "web application" was new, web applications delivered primitive functionality that paled in comparison to installable applications. This was considered a reasonable tradeoff because of the audience that could be reached, the simplicity of not having to install anything or maintain software on end user's machines. Reach and simplicity mattered more than anything.
Reach and simplicity are just as important today.

Your Personal Hard Drive on the Internet

Daily backup data is important to us. It is also important to make sure that backed up data is located somewhere other than where primary data is - so one disaster won't take out both sets. Nowadays, there are many online services that can be used for online storage.
The basic promise of online storage is the security and peace of mind of having an offsite copy of your data. Offsite online storage can also make your data more accessible if you want to share it. But how do you choose which service to go with? It all depends on what you want out of your online storage service. In this review, we'll take a look at six popular online storage services: Xdrive, MediaMax, IDrive-E, Omnidrive, Box.net, Carbonite and Mozy. Each of these services offers a free trial that does not require a credit card for signup - so after you read this article, you can go and try them out for yourself.

A free software to recover deleted file

Undelete Plus is a quick and effective way to retrieve accidentally deleted files, files removed from the Recycle Bin, in a DOS window, from a network drive, from Windows Explorer with the SHIFT key held down.

Undelete Plus works under Win 95/98/Me/NT/2000/XP/2003/Vista operating systems. The program supports all Windows file systems for hard and floppy drives including FAT12/16/32,NTFS/NTFS5 and image recovery from CompactFlash, SmartMedia, MultiMedia and Secure Digital cards.

Software : Undelete Plus
Version : 2.71
Size: 1.07MB
Important Information: The following three things are important for a successful restoration:

(1) The more recent your last defrag was the better your chance of recovering the deleted file so defrag often (at least once a week). DO NOT defrag the disk after you decide to try and retrieve an erased file.

(2) Every time that your computer writes to disk the chances increase that your deleted file will be overwritten. The sooner you make a restoration attempt the more likely you will be successful.
(3) the smaller the size of the file - the better your chance of success to restore it.

When Undelete Plus saves a restored file it reads its content and then writes it to a new file with the same name. It is recommended that you save the files that you are recovering to another disk because of the risk of overwriting other files that you may be trying to recover with the newly recovered one that you are saving. It would be best not to save the retrieved files back to the same hard drive until after completing all attempts to retrieve any lost files. This will minimize the chance of corrupting any remaining lost files.

Save, synchronize and share favorites between computers, friends and family. You may be asking yourself - why would I need something like - BatBar- I already have my favorites in my internet browser, and it is working just fine. There are many situations where BatBar.spiderwebfx.com can help you. Here are just a few examples: Favorites on a new computer:You buy a new computer or hard disc - or just re-install your Operating System. All your favorites are now lost! Of course your could have made a backup or saved your favorites on your old computer/hard disc before you changed to the new one - but most people forget to do it. You don't miss your favorites until they are gone! If you use BatBar for your favorites - you only have to reinstall the BatBar software and log in and you will not loose any of your favorites each time you get a new computer. Favorites on more than one computer:Many homes have more than one computer today, or you may be working with computers at work or at school. It is nearly impossible to keep 2, 3 or 4 sets of favorites updated and synchronized between all of these computers. BatBar can keep these favorites synchronized and give you access to your favorites anywhere you can get an internet connection. Sharing favorites with friends and family:I regularly exchange web links with family and friends, but often I have trouble remembering that long website address I just added to my favorites a week ago. Using BatBar to store my favorite links - I only have to remember one link: BatBar.SpiderWebFX.com.

Computer Tips - A small gesture in Firefox

MOUSE GESTURES is an add-on to Mozilla’s Firefox browser.
As its name suggests, this add-on lets you perform certain browser functions, like scrolling, zooming and opening new page tabs, by drawing specific little squiggles on screen with your mouse pointer – instead of having to drag the cursor up to a tab or scroll bar.
Once you get the hang of it and remember which gesture does what, you can take a few miles off your mouse because you perform whatever action you need right where your cursor is.
There is a visual setting you can use to display a coloured trail of pixels so you can see the gesture you are performing.
You can download and install mouse Gestures1.5.2 for firefox at http://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/39.
Once it is installed, you add, delete or edit gestures, adjust the settings and even print out a little chart of gesture patterns to help you learn the moves.
To get to the preferences box in Firefox, go to the Tools menu, then to Add-ons. Scroll down on Mouse Gestures in the list of add-ons and click the options button.
The current version supports Windows and Linux systems, and although there is a Mac OSX edition available, development was stopped with version 1.5 – New York Times Special Features

Changing the Recycle Bin's size

The Windows Recycle Bin provides a safeguard against accidental deletions.
But its size is limited, so unless you recover an accidentally-deleted file soon, you may be out of luck.
You can change the size of the recycle bin for any drive, however. Just right click the recycle bin icon on the desktop. Make sure that the 'configure each drive independently' option is on.
Then move to the tab for the drive that you want to configured and specify that size as the percentage of the drives space.

Chinese search engines "hijacked" : US analysts

US Internet search engines in China were being hijacked and directed to Chinese-owned Baidu, analysts said Wednesday, speculating that this may be retaliation for the White House award to exiled Tibetan leader the Dalai Lama.
Analysts at Search Engine Roundtable, a website focusing on Internet search, said Chinese users trying to search on Google, Yahoo and Microsoft websites were being directed to the Chinese search engine.
"It seems like China is fed up with the US, so as a way to fight back, they redirected virtually all search traffic from Google, Yahoo and Microsoft to Baidu, the Chinese based search engine," the analysts wrote.

oneSearch SMS is available through all major operators including Airtel, Reliance Mobile, Vodafone, Idea Cellular, BPL Mobile, Aircel, Tata Indicom, and Spice Telecom.

"By providing mobile consumers with instant answers for any search query sent via SMS, we are drastically improving the mobile search experience and will now expand our reach to almost all mobile users in the country," said Manish Dalal, senior director, mobile products, Yahoo! India.

Along with the launch, Yahoo! has also enhanced its existing oneSearch WAP product by introducing new content clusters including local business listings, flight status information and Yahoo! Answers content. This is in addition to other content clusters like web results, mobile web results, weather, news, finance, web images, and Flickr photos.

MySpace and Skype in free phone call deal

By Andrew Clark New York

Nearly 110m global devotees of the internet's top social networking site, MySpace, will soon be able to make free telephone calls to each other through a deal with Skype. Under the tie-up, MySpace will embed the internet telecoms specialist's voice communications technology in its existing instant messaging function which allows members to chat to one another.

The arrangement could be crucial both to MySpace's parent company, News Corporation, and to Skype's owner, eBay - both under pressure to demonstrate they can make money out of huge online followings.

Ebay last night revealed a third-quarter loss of $936m after taking a $1.4bn charge to write down the value of Skype, which it bought for $2.6bn two years ago. Skype broke into profit this year, but has failed to live up to eBay's hopes of turning it into a major moneyspinner.

Skype offers free calls between its 246m subscribers, although it levies a fee for calls to landlines and mobile phones. It also makes money through premium services such as voicemail and call forwarding.

MySpace hailed the "groundbreaking" relationship with Skype. Its chief executive, Chris DeWolfe, said: "Our network has no geographical boundaries - internet calling is the natural next step for how our members communicate."

Tips for optimizing your php code

If you are PHP Programmer, this excellent article is really good for you

  1. If a method can be static, declare it static. Speed improvement is by a factor of 4.

  2. echo is faster than print.

  3. Use echo's multiple parameters instead of string concatenation.

  4. Set the maxvalue for your for-loops before and not in the loop.

  5. Unset your variables to free memory, especially large arrays.

  6. Avoid magic like __get, __set, __autoload

  7. require_once() is expensive

  8. Use full paths in includes and requires, less time spent on resolving the OS paths.

  9. If you need to find out the time when the script started executing, $_SERVER['REQUEST_TIME'] is preferred to time()

  10. See if you can use strncasecmp, strpbrk and stripos instead of regex

  11. str_replace is faster than preg_replace, but strtr is faster than str_replace by a factor of 4

  12. If the function, such as string replacement function, accepts both arrays and single characters as arguments, and if your argument list is not too long, consider writing a few redundant replacement statements, passing one character at a time, instead of one line of code that accepts arrays as search and replace arguments.

  13. It's better to use select statements than multi if, else if, statements.

  14. Error suppression with @ is very slow.

  15. Turn on apache's mod_deflate

  16. Close your database connections when you're done with them

  17. $row['id'] is 7 times faster than $row[id]

  18. Error messages are expensive

  19. Do not use functions inside of for loop, such as for ($x=0; $x <count($array); $x) The count() function gets called each time.

  20. Incrementing a local variable in a method is the fastest. Nearly the same as calling a local variable in a function.

  21. Incrementing a global variable is 2 times slow than a local var.

  22. Incrementing an object property (eg. $this->prop++) is 3 times slower than a local variable.

  23. Incrementing an undefined local variable is 9-10 times slower than a pre-initialized one.

  24. Just declaring a global variable without using it in a function also slows things down (by about the same amount as incrementing a local var). PHP probably does a check to see if the global exists.

  25. Method invocation appears to be independent of the number of methods defined in the class because I added 10 more methods to the test class (before and after the test method) with no change in performance.

  26. Methods in derived classes run faster than ones defined in the base class.

  27. A function call with one parameter and an empty function body takes about the same time as doing 7-8 $localvar++ operations. A similar method call is of course about 15 $localvar++ operations.

  28. Surrounding your string by ' instead of " will make things interpret a little faster since php looks for variables inside "..." but not inside '...'. Of course you can only do this when you don't need to have variables in the string.

  29. When echoing strings it's faster to separate them by comma instead of dot. Note: This only works with echo, which is a function that can take several strings as arguments.

  30. A PHP script will be served at least 2-10 times slower than a static HTML page by Apache. Try to use more static HTML pages and fewer scripts.

  31. Your PHP scripts are recompiled every time unless the scripts are cached. Install a PHP caching product to typically increase performance by 25-100% by removing compile times.

  32. Cache as much as possible. Use memcached - memcached is a high-performance memory object caching system intended to speed up dynamic web applications by alleviating database load. OP code caches are useful so that your script does not have to be compiled on every request

  33. When working with strings and you need to check that the string is either of a certain length you'd understandably would want to use the strlen() function. This function is pretty quick since it's operation does not perform any calculation but merely return the already known length of a string available in the zval structure (internal C struct used to store variables in PHP). However because strlen() is a function it is still somewhat slow because the function call requires several operations such as lowercase & hashtable lookup followed by the execution of said function. In some instance you can improve the speed of your code by using an isset() trick.

    Ex.
    if (strlen($foo) < 5) { echo "Foo is too short"; }
    vs.
    if (!isset($foo{5})) { echo "Foo is too short"; }

Calling isset() happens to be faster then strlen() because unlike strlen(), isset() is a language construct and not a function meaning that it's execution does not require function lookups and lowercase. This means you have virtually no overhead on top of the actual code that determines the string's length.

  34. When incrementing or decrementing the value of the variable $i++ happens to be a tad slower then ++$i. This is something PHP specific and does not apply to other languages, so don't go modifying your C or Java code thinking it'll suddenly become faster, it won't. ++$i happens to be faster in PHP because instead of 4 opcodes used for $i++ you only need 3. Post incrementation actually causes in the creation of a temporary var that is then incremented. While pre-incrementation increases the original value directly. This is one of the optimization that opcode optimized like Zend's PHP optimizer. It is a still a good idea to keep in mind since not all opcode optimizers perform this optimization and there are plenty of ISPs and servers running without an opcode optimizer.

  35. Not everything has to be OOP, often it is too much overhead, each method and object call consumes a lot of memory.

  36. Do not implement every data structure as a class, arrays are useful, too

  37. Don't split methods too much, think, which code you will really re-use

  38. You can always split the code of a method later, when needed

  39. Make use of the countless predefined functions

  40. If you have very time consuming functions in your code, consider writing them as C extensions

  41. Profile your code. A profiler shows you, which parts of your code consumes how many time. The Xdebug debugger already contains a profiler. Profiling shows you the bottlenecks in overview

  42. mod_gzip which is available as an Apache module compresses your data on the fly and can reduce the data to transfer up to 80%

10 dirty little secrets you should know about working in IT

If you are preparing for a career in IT or are new to IT, many of the "dirty little secrets" listed below may surprise you because we don't usually talk about them out loud. If you are an IT veteran, you've probably encountered most of these issues and have a few of your own to add - and please, by all means, take a moment to add them to the discussion. Most of these secrets are aimed at network administrators, IT managers, and desktop support professionals. This list is not aimed at developers and programmers - they have their own set of additional dirty little secrets - but some of these will apply to them as well.

1.) The pay in IT is good compared to many other professions, but since they pay you well, they often think they own you

2.) It will be your fault when users make silly errors

3.) You will go from goat to hero and back again multiple times within any given day

4.) Certifications won't always help you become a better technologist, but they can help you land a better job or a pay raise

5.) Your nontechnical co-workers will use you as personal tech support for their home PCs

6.) Vendors and consultants will take all the credit when things work well and will blame you when things go wrong

7.) You'll spend far more time babysitting old technologies than implementing new ones

8.) Veteran IT professionals are often the biggest roadblock to implementing new technologies

9.) Some IT professionals deploy technologies that do more to consolidate their own power than to help the business

10.) IT pros frequently use jargon to confuse nontechnical business managers and hide the fact that they screwed up

How to track the original location of an email via its IP address

Here's a quick how-to guide on how you can track email to it's originating location by figuring out the email's IP address and looking it up. I have found this to be quite useful on many occasions for verification purposes since I receive lots of emails daily due to my blog. Tracking the IP address of an email sender does require looking at some technical details, so be ready to dig your heels in!
There are basically two steps involved in the process of tracking an email: find the IP address in the email header section and then look up the location of the IP address.

Let's go ahead and take a look at how you would do this for Google, Yahoo and Outlook since those are the most popular email clients.

Google's Gmail
1. Log into your account and open the email in question.
2. Click on the down arrow that's to the right of the Reply link. Choose Show Original from the list.

Now here's the technical part that I was telling you about earlier! You need to look for the lines of text that start with "Received: from". It might be easier to simply press Cntrl + F and perform a search for that phase. You'll notice that there are several Received From's in the message header. This is because the message header contains the IP addresses of all of servers involved in routing that email to you.

Yahoo Mail Beta
1. Log into your account and open the email (if you're using Yahoo Mail Beta with the new preview interface, make sure you double-click on the email so that it opens in a new tab)
2. At the top right, you'll see there is a drop-down option where Standard Header is selected by default.
3. Click on it and choose Full Header.

Microsoft Outlook
1. Open the email in Outlook by double-clicking on it
2. Go to View at the top menu (the menu options for the email, not the main Outlook window) and choose Options.

You'll get a dialog box where you can set the message options and at the bottom you'll see the Internet Headers box. For some silly reason, the box is very small and you have to scroll a lot, so it's best to simply copy and paste the text into Notepad to view it more easily.

Tracking the location of an IP address
Now that we have our originating IP address of 72.204.154.191, let's find out where that is! You can do this by perform a location lookup on the IP address. My favorites are IP2Location and GeoBytes IP Locator.
GeoBytes gave me a big map of New Orleans, LA along with a bunch of other information about the location itself.

IP2Location also gave me the same information pretty much, including the ISP (Cox Communications).
If you want more information, you can do a WHOIS database search also. My favorite one is the ARIN WHOIS Database Search. This will give you information on who hosts that IP address and their registration information. You can always contact them to try and find more information on that particular IP address.

Salary survey: IT pay falls short

Typical raises beat national rate of inflation, bringing average base pay to $86,700. Yet network professionals aren’t happy with their salary packages, as the 2007 Network World Salary Survey finds.
Network professionals generally earned annual salary raises that bested the national 3. 2% inflation rate by a percentage point or two — and received hardy bonuses, too, according to the 2007 Network World Salary Survey

Overall job satisfaction
Far fewer respondents are dissatisfied with their jobs overall than are satisfied.

Why Call Yahoo?

February 1994: Jerry and David bookmark the Web.

Some hobbies take on a life of their own; others change the world. In early 1994, Stanford PhD students Jerry Yang and David Filo posted a list of their favorite sites on the Web. The exact date they posted the links is lost to history, but we do know the list's original name: "Jerry and David's Guide to the World Wide Web." By April '94 it had a new tongue-in-cheek name: "Yet Another Hierarchical Officious Oracle," or Yahoo for short.

My daily life can’t live without top 10 tools

Firefox - Firefox plus Greasemonkey takes an already rockin’ browser into a world of its own.
ScribeFire - Writing on blogs. This means lots of linking, bookmarking, making notes and of course the actual writing. I would say using Scribefire I can do it all in half the time. Scribefire is a Firefox plugin that provides blogging tools including a centralized word-like text editing interface.
Skype - Skype makes these calls free or much cheaper and allows me to roam around and not be tied to a land-line.
Fastmail - The main advantage is having a web client you can also access your email using imap, allowing me to sync my desktop client and see in a web browser exactly the same email store.
WebDav - Talking of web based storage, a fantastic way to get your files on the go is WebDav. Drag and drop your files and folders just like you were working locally. Check out your web host to see if this is an option.
SSH - This is an extremely nerdy choice but it has been a life saver in the past. SSH allows you a secure command line login to your remote server. On Windows of course you can use Remote Desktop, and other platforms will have VNC, but when the proverbial hits the fan you can rely on SSH and old school commands to get the job done.
WordPress - Use it for publishing your corporate website, internal project documentation, team collaboration, making notes, bookmarking, even as a discussion platform.
Photoshop -. Once you have learned it, Photoshop makes that happen for working with images.
BlogBridge - I need my RSS feeds and I need them with me. While many people can argue in favor of their fave web clients I keep returning to BlogBridge happily time after time. It is a Java based desktop application so works wherever Java works and stores your feeds offline so you can read on the train, in the air or bus home.
Flickr -Flickr for me is more than just an online photo gallery, it is a photography archive, a community and a source of royalty-free images (Creative Commons Licensed pics). It’s useful, fun and a constant source of education.

How to Create an "Invisible" Folder for Your, um, "Private" Files

You ever have a folder on your computer that you really dont want any one to find? You can make this folder hidden but then you have to un-hide all the folders when ever you want to find it। So how can you make a folder truly invisible? Follow these simple steps and your unmentionables will stay that way.
1. Right click where ever you want the invisible folder to be and select create a new folder.
2. Right Click on the folder and hit rename. Erase the name of the folder so there is nothing there.
3. If you try to stop here windows will tell you that you need to provide a name. So to get around this… with the name field still active hold down ALT and press 0160 on the number pad (make sure Num Lock is on), release alt
You should now have a blank name with nothing but a folder next to it
4. Now click on the nameless folder and right click. Select Properties.
5. Go to the Customize tab.
6. Find and press the Change Icon button. Scroll through the icons until you find one that has no image.
4. Hit OK and you have an invisible folder!
With the invisible folder you can hide what ever undesirables you have. Be it video games at work, pictures of your family or anything else you can think of “wink”.
The folder will show up for a brief second if you put it on your desktop। For that reason it might be smart to place it inside a folder or amongst a group of folders.

Google brings YouTube clips to AdSense

By Jennifer LeClaire

Google distributing YouTube video clips through the AdSense network is kind of analogous to what Google was doing with YouTube on the YouTube site, said Greg Sterling, principal analyst at Sterling Market Intelligence. "People have been speculating over how Google would make money with YouTube. This is one way."

Google is extending its YouTube brand, with plans to show videos on sites all over the Web। AdSense publishers now can display relevant, targeted video content within a customized, embedded player that is supported by advertising.

Phone with a rape alarm

chekout this new phone .... i mean new feature
I find it interesting that the Armani phone comes with a built-in rape alarm that is definitely a plus point in my book. It can be triggered via jeans or heavy material, so no worries if you need to access it even when your fashionable handset is lying inside your LV leather bag.

All you need to do is pre-program the number of your five closest relatives and trusted friends under a special contact group, and whenever you feel threatened, just press the volume button four times to kickstart the safety feature that will send out SOS text messages to those aforementioned numbers. Not only that, the integrated GPS tracking system will activate immediately so that you can be easily tracked down. Why not make this feature standard across all handsets? link:http://www.gadgetguild.com/2007/10/01/armani-phone-with-built-in-rape-alarm/

20 tips to get more juice from your laptop battery

Steve ''Boss Man''
When there are no power outlets in sight there's nothing more frustrating than a dying laptop battery। We've all been in that situation where we have a couple hours of work left to finish but our battery life is only estimated to last one more। Good news। Often times these situations can be avoided by optimizing the battery performance. Here are 20 tips that will help your laptop battery last longer.

1. Calibrate your battery - Most laptop batteries these days have internal processors that provide an estimate of your battery life. Calibrating your battery so it shows the correct battery time and percentage is the first step in getting the most performance out of your laptop battery. Ideally, you should do this 3-4 times per year and should consult your owner's manual for instructions.

2. Adjust your settings - Just about every new laptop will have some kind of advanced power options settings. Optimize these settings for maximum performance.

3. Buy the Right Processor - The type of CPU can have a huge impact on how long your laptop will last on a full charge, Newer CPUs even shut down parts of the chip to conserve power. Intel chips tend to be more powerful than the AMD ones with their larger L2 cache but use more power, but you can get your work done faster so the total power used is about the same either way. The newest 65nm Memrons by Intel are extremely powerful and power efficient. Dual cores with 4MB cache and low power. The AMD Turion 64 line when they come out will compete with the Intel Memrons as they will have chips that are even more power efficient. The Pentium M chips use even less power but not as powerful since they are not dual core.

4. Only run programs you need - Having multiple programs running at the same time seems like an unnecessary way to drain your battery. Instead consider running only program at a time. In other words, if you're browsing the web don't leave your email client running in the background, check it when you're done surfing the web.

5. Dim your screen - One of the fastest ways you can kill your battery is by leaving your screen brightness high. Dim your screen to the lowest level you can possibly manage.

6। Disable unnecessary programs - You know all those programs that automatically run on startup? You probably don't need them or use most of them anyways। So just turn them off before they eat into your battery resources.

7. Keep operating temps down - Batteries perform better when they're cool. Clean your air vents and avoid placing your laptop in a position that will restrict airflow (such as your lap).

8। Don't watch DVDs or play games - If you're going to be away from a power source for more than a couple hours it's a good idea to avoid watching DVDs listening to music, or playing games. These can be serious drains on your battery.

9। Limit external devices - USB devices or anything else you have plugged in uses battery resources even when they're not in use. Now is probably not the best time to try out your new USB hand warmer.

10। Don't standby, hibernate - Not only does using hibernate instead of standby conserve battery power, but it also automatically saves and shuts off your laptop. Standby mode still uses power.

11. Clean battery contacts - Proper battery maintenance includes cleaning the battery contacts that connect your cells to the laptop. Battery power is transferred through the contacts and keeping them clean allows for a more efficient transfer of power. The best way to do this is with rubbing alcohol and cotton swabs.

12. Use the battery - Once it's charged, don't let your laptop battery sit for extended periods of time. Never let it go more than 2-3 weeks without discharging and recharging. This is especially important for non Li-Ion batteries.

13. Don't leave it in sunlight - Batteries are sensitive and exposing them to extreme temperatures can cause major damage. Not only can it completely ruin them but it will also suck the life out of them. Avoid placing your laptop in direct sunlight.

14. Turn off wireless and Bluetooth rurning off your Bluetooth and wireless won't save you a whole lot of power but in certain situations every bit counts.

15. Decrease hard drive activity - When your hard drive spins it uses power. Defragmenting it regularly will put less demand on it because data is found more quickly.

16. Avoid using the CD/DVD player - Using the CD/DVD drive on your laptop should be avoided at all costs. Even having a disk in the drive uses power. Try copying what you need from a disk to the hard drive before hand.

17. Be picky with software - Some software programs suffer from bloatware and will eat your battery super fast. Avoid using things like Adobe Photoshop, your digital camera software, and other image editing software.

18. Less is more - Next time you're in the market for a new laptop, think twice about that 17in widescreen. You'd be much better off opting for a smaller machine that won't devour half of a battery just to power up.

19. Turn off speakers - If you must listen to music use your iPod instead, just make sure it's not plugged into your laptop.

20. Carry a spare device or battery - This seems like a common sense thing to do, but make sure you always carry a spare device or battery. It will come in handy in case of an emergency or long stretches between power outlets.
